The last place we expected to find timely and hilarious commentary about the ongoing scandal surrounding Jussie Smollett was the TNT’s halftime show during the NBA, but that’s what Charles Barkley served up on Thursday night, and Twitter was loving it.

It wasn’t even a topic of conversation, but that didn’t stop the former NBA All-Star from making it one. They were talking about the teams heading into the playoffs and those that might fall short. Barkley wasn’t even the one asked which of their items was the most ridiculous and had no chance of happening, but he couldn’t resist the setup.

“Two black guys beating a black guy up,” he responded with a straight face. Shaquille O’Neal almost immediately started cracking up, and it was all the other guys could do to try and keep the show on track. Ultimately, they failed.

After cracking some jokes about the MAGA hats Smollett claimed his alleged attackers were wearing, Barkley settled into one of the more ridiculous details of the case against Smollett. And he did so by speaking directly to the nation.

“America, let me just tell you something,” he said. “Do not commit crimes with checks. Come on man, if you’re gonna break the law, do not write a check. Get cash, man.”

Later, Barkley alluded to reports that Smollett had allegedly written a $3,500 check to pay for two men to attack him.

“America, let me just tell you something,” Barkley said. “Do not commit crimes with checks. If you’re gonna break the law, do not write a check. … Get cash, man. I never use the ATM. Now, I heard you can only get 200 dollars … Gonna make a lot of stops at the ATM. … Do not write checks when you commit illegal activity.”

The comments drew more laughs and head-shaking from Barkley’s colleagues.

Before a commercial break, Barkley offered some advice directly to Smollett.

“Jussie, you wasted all that damn time and money. You know what you shoulda did? Just went up to Liam Neeson’s neighborhood. You coulda solved all your damn problems.”

Neeson made headlines of his own recently for saying he developed an urge to kill a black man after learning that a friend had been raped by a black suspect.

The actor’s remarks drew swift backlash.
